Chapter Seventeen

Gathering Clouds

“Geez, I’m coming!” Kelly stormed through the hallway to the foyer, thoroughly annoyed at the loud, incessant pounding on the front door. Through the side window, she saw the face of their next-door neighbour, Ross, set in an angry mask. She sighed heavily while she crossed the foyer, opening the door to bring her face to face with the livid man.

“Can I help you?” she said with no shortage of irritation in her voice, squinting in the last rays of the setting sun, the glare mercifully blocking out most of Ross’ less-than-attractive features.

“When the hell is that noise in your back yard going to stop?” he bellowed, making her flinch with the force of his booming voice. His hands flapped in the air as he complained loudly. “We’ve been listening to those goddamn machines out there all day! It’s nine o’clock in the fucking evening, when are they going to stop? I have kids that are trying to sleep!”

“You never seem much concerned about noise when it’s your fecking dog howling in the middle of the night, Mr. Bradey.” Brijit’s calm, silken voice echoed from the upstairs hallway. The irate man peered into the house with an expression of confusion his eyes darting about to find the source of the voice. When the last rays of the sun disappeared behind the trees, Brijit stepped into view from behind Kelly as if from nowhere, Ross stepping back in fright. “Where is that useless mutt anyway? Did you finally come to your senses and do away with the daft thing?”

Ross sputtered as he regarded the beautiful Brijit. She always left him flustered and this time Kelly could clearly see him vacillate between anger and lust. It usually made him incapable of forming complete sentences when she was around. Unfortunately, this turned out not to be one of those times.

“He’s been missing for days, and I think you had something to do with it!” he responded when he got his voice back, pointing a finger straight at the vampire.

“Prove it,” Brijit scoffed, ignoring the finger. “Anyway, I have given the workmen strict orders to make use of every available moment of sunlight, and they should be stopping right about… now.” As if on cue, the noise in the back yard abated as one by one the heavy machinery shut down for the evening. Brijit gave the sweetest smile she could muster as Ross’ face grew tight, his jaw clenching uncontrollably.

“See?” she said with a haughty tilt of her head while Kelly hid her mouth with a hand, trying to control her laughter. “All done, so you can calm yerself and not be getting stroppy with us. You and your inbred brood can go to sleep in peace and quiet. Now if you’ll excuse us…” Brijit swung the door closed, letting it slam in Ross’ face, almost causing him to lose his balance on the small front porch. Infuriated, he kicked the door with his foot, his muffled shouting coming through the thick door as Brijit and Kelly turned toward the kitchen, leaving the complaining man to his rage.
